Q&A

What led you to pursue a career in manufacturing?

The biggest influences in my life that led to a career in technology are the teachers and mentors that I’ve had along the way. Growing up I knew I loved math, but I refused to say it out loud. Most students had a favorite subject of social studies or science. As I moved into high school, I had physics, technology, and music teachers who provided the push I needed to be confident, proud, and comfortable in my own skin. They are the reasons I felt accepted within the technology world and decided to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

What has your journey been like?

When I first got to college, it was a tough transition, especially after receiving a 17% on my first college physics exam. But my family was extremely supportive, even when I didn’t think I was capable of becoming a mechanical engineer. Their support and my perseverance are the reasons I was able to graduate from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in four and a half years with high distinction and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering.

When my professional career started in January 2020, I never would have expected to be working remotely in less than two months. Starting my career right at the beginning of the pandemic was a very isolating experience, during a time when I wanted to make a place for myself and find my niche.

Over time, the mentorships I’ve cultivated – including virtually – have provided guidance and turned an isolating experience into an expansive network within the technology and engineering world.

Now that I am more than two years into my professional career, I’ve reached a point where I’m asking myself, “What’s next?” With the most supportive manager and team behind me, I can confidently say I am ready for the next challenge that the up-and-down elevator world has to offer.

What have you learned about yourself?

Laughter is one of the easiest and most inclusive ways to connect with others. A smile can go a long way and is one of my favorite ways to ensure others feel welcome and heard.

Do you have any advice for people interested in a career in manufacturing?

Ask questions! There are many people who would love to share their work and knowledge with you. If you’re interested in a career in a technology-related field, do a quick search on Google or LinkedIn and ask to set up an informational interview. You’ll be surprised by the amount of information you can learn over a cup of coffee.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I’m in a community band where I play the clarinet. I enjoy playing golf and have recently joined the Otis golf league. Living in Connecticut has provided many opportunities to spend time with family and friends dispersed throughout New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
